For SFSU’s Student Mobile Design competition, I built lull: an app designed to assist migraine patients in tracking the entire trajectory of their headaches. From triggers and intensity to medication and after-effects.

For this case study, I’ll be using visual cues wherever possible for a more facile and dispatched reading experience. I’ll be going through the overall building process as well as design decisions I deemed necessary for a smooth and hassle-free experience for the user.

The prompt suggested I design an app to ease one of my daily problems or fulfill a small day-to-day need. The brainstorming process threw me into a fit of ideas but nothing that would stick because whatever I came up with was already sitting in the marketplace with a plethora of users. After spending a good amount of time going through self-help and habit-tracking apps, I decided to read their reviews to see what was missing.
During this time of research, I came across a dearth of apps specializing in headaches, more specifically migraines. After researching a handful of available migraine apps, I hypothesized that being able to track their migraine attacks was of utmost importance to the patients, and not a lot of apps provided that service. So, I delved deeper into the issue and gathered a lot more information.

Key Learnings
Key Learnings
Key Learnings
Upon conducting the research for migraine and how it affects people, I stumbled upon a crucial point: people suffering from migraines tend to journal their experience in order to recognize some obvious triggers and understand the effect it has on their headache.
Triggers are inherently disparate for everybody and the intensity varies. This further corroborated my preliminary hypothesis of how important it was to trace every aspect of your migraine in order to understand it and make it more bearable.
After talking to a bunch of people suffering from migraines, including students, faculty, administrators, and more I saw that migraines were more common amongst 30 to 40 somethings and not everyone was comfortable enough typing their triggers and symptoms on a computer or phone. They'd rather physically jot things down.

After talking to a friend who had suffered from migraines all her life, I was able to comprehend quite a lot about migraine patients but I didn’t want to stop just there. I read multiple migraine-related forums and subreddits where patients talked about their attacks and what they thought would help. After conducting substantial research, two personas were born.

Every medical record comprises basic patient information such as height, weight, age, gender and more. Lull intends to invigorate it’s user to share insights generated by the app with their primary physician. The onboarding flow will help users do just that.
The user will first sign up using a google, facebook or email account. The wizard will then try to autofill all the available information for the onboarding questionnaire, helping in maintaining a smoother user flow. An option to skip the basic information questionnaire will be provided to the users with an option to create a medical profile later.

Users will be tracking their migraine attacks from the ‘Track (home)’ page of the app. The iOS and Android pages will differ slightly in terms of the UI experience based on the respective platform. While the iOS screen has a top right action button, the Android screen uses a floating action button.
An option to disable the screen with a “Don’t show again” button will also be available to the users in case they feel like it’s causing them a hindrance in recording their migraines.
After getting past the breather screen, the user will be greeted with a QnA style form consisting of basic UI elements like sliders, checkboxes and option boxes which will make it relatively easier to record migraines without unnecessary typing.

A records tab will hold all the reports, with a calendar view to help users easily navigate to a specific date. The calendar will also serve as a visual timeline for the attacks with the color of the box indicating the severity of the attacks on each day.
The user will be moved to the detailed report screen after clicking on a certain record. The detailed report comprises all the information provided by the user of a particular attack. They will also have an option to edit the detailed report, such as add missing information. This option can be accessed through the edit icon on the screen.
An option to share a single report for episodic migraine patients (approx 1 or 2/month) and an option to share all reports for chronic migraine patients (approx 12 to 15/month) will be available to the users. Both buttons lie at the bottom of the screen for easy access.

Designing this bullet journal has been a journey in asking a lot of questions. It was clear from the onset that a major challenge would be to compete with physical diaries that were more intuitive to use for the migraine patient demographic. I researched why migraine patients journal their attacks and how physicians built a treatment plan. I understood that patients needed a quick and easy way to track their triggers and onsets leading to a migraine. I realized that a mobile app with aggregated insights, medical reports and an easy wizard to track attacks would have a competitive edge over a physical diary and decided to pursue that angle.
